Effective January 1, 2021, the District of Summerland will no longer be managing the Home Owner Grant (HOG) Program on behalf of the Province of BC. Program eligibility has not changed, however, homeowners can no longer apply for their HOG at Municipal Hall.
The Home Owner Grant reduces the amount of property tax you pay for your principal residence. The grant application must be completed each year that a claim is made, no matter what method of payment you choose to make (i.e. pre-authorized payment, mortgage payment, cheque, etc.).
If you are eligible for the Home Owner Grant, you will need to apply directly to the Province of BC using their online system or by calling 1-888-355-2700. In order to avoid penalties and interest, you are strongly encouraged to claim your HOG as soon as you receive your property tax notice, as unclaimed Home Owner Grants are deemed to be unpaid taxes and are subject to a 10% penalty if not claimed prior to the property tax deadline of July 2, 2021.
