Climate Action

Summerland's Community Energy & Emissions Reduction Plan was finalized in February 2020 as was the Corporate Energy & Emissions Management Plan in March 2021, following consultation with key stakeholders, staff, community members, Council, and Simon Fraser University's Adaptation to Climate Change Team. Thank you to all who participated, to the Community Energy Association for their assistance in developing the plans, and to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and FortisBC for their funding support.

The Community Climate Action Advisory Committee (CCAC) meets once a month and is comprised of Summerland residents, the Manager of Planning and Sustainability, and one Council member. The role of the committee is to provide a local perspective and advice to Council with respect to achieving community-wide emission reduction targets, and other climate related objectives. More information can be found here.

If you would like to join the committee a yearly call-out for new member(s) occurs in March with a one or two-year term commitment. Advertising of positions usually occurs in the monthly Newsletters, and on our Facebook page.

Regional Climate Information

South Okanagan Similkameen Extreme Heat Resilience Project
Between 2023 and 2024, the RDOS in partnership with the Upper Similkameen Indian Band, Lower Similkameen Indian Band, Osoyoos Indian Band, Penticton Indian Ban, Village of Keremeos, Town of Oliver, Town of Osoyoos, Town of Princeton and District of Summerland provided knowledge and input into this report, completed in October 2024. The report provides an overview of how extreme heat has and can continue to impact life, property and well-being across the region, and lists specific action opportunities that local governments and First Nations and regional partners can take to implement.

The District of Summerland specifically hosted an in-person workshop on May 23 2024 to provide opportunities for the public and residents to provide insights and information towards understanding the impacts of extreme heat in Summerland. A region-wide survey was also released to collect information on the heat experiences of residents, business owners and property owners. The Summerland Arena and Curling Club was part of a building assessment, and two of our parks, Dale Meadows and Powell Beach were assessed as part of the parks assessments.

Climate Projections for the Okanagan Region
Completed in 2020, a Climate Projections report for the region was written in collaboration with the Regional Districts of the North Okanagan, Central Okanagan and Okanagan-Similkameen, partnered with the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium and Pinna Sustainability.

You can find the report on the RDOS website here
