Open Fire Ban

Effective noon July 7, 2017 until further notice, open fires are prohibited within the District of Summerland. This open fire ban is in effect to protect public safety and to limit the risk of person-caused fires.

Currently all District of Summerland parks and trails remain open to foot or bicycle traffic but municipal staff will continue to monitor the fire risk and will take appropriate measures as needed.  All public trails are closed to motorized vehicles (this includes ATVs and motorcycles). The road within Giant’s Head Park is closed to vehicle traffic as well.

The ban does not restrict fires in stoves using gas, propane or briquettes.
Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and /or sentenced to one year in jail.  If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
The Summerland Fire Department thanks the public for their co-operation in complying with the ban.
