Residents may have noticed that hydrants throughout town were open in the afternoon on Saturday July 9. Due to a faulty level transducer at the Summerland reservoir, the water level in the reservoir surpassed our high water alarm level which increased the risk of a potential breach of the dam. The precipitation received Friday evening and Saturday morning resulted in very little demand on the Water Treatment Plant thus limiting the ability to drop the level in the reservoir with any speed. In order to mitigate the risks at the reservoir, the District took necessary actions, one of which was opening hydrants at five locations from approximately 1:00pm to 3:30 pm. As the District is very conscious of conserving water, this was a last resort and only done because of the extreme situation.
