Waste Reduction Week October 16 -22, 2017

Waste Reduction Week 2017 Activity Poster

It’s Waste Reduction Week in Summerland!

Reducing the amount of waste that we send to landfill is important not only for the environment, but for our economy as well. Landfill space is valuable and the more waste we create, the more expensive it is for our community to maintain the landfill over time.

The best way to avoid waste is to Reduce it in the first place by avoiding unnecessary purchases and packaging. The next best option to is to Reuse wherever possible by repurposing items, shopping second-hand, or donating items so they can continue to be used. Finally, Recycle or Compost all materials that are at their end of life. Check out http://wrwcanada.com/en for ideas on how you can reduce waste in your home or business!

To help celebrate Waste Reduction Week, Summerland is hosting the following events:

FREE Screening of Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story
Wednesday, October 18, 7:00pm (doors open @6:45)
Arena Banquet Room (8820 Jubilee Rd. – upstairs; doors on SE corner of building)

Just Eat It is an award-winning 74-minute documentary film about food waste and food rescue by Peg Leg Films in partnership with British Columbia's Knowledge Network.

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling.

WIN a $500 Business Waste Audit for Waste Reduction Week!

Waste disposal can be a major cost for businesses, but it doesn’t need to be! Many solutions exist for reducing waste in the first place, and for reducing the costs to get what can’t be avoided to the landfill.

The District of Summerland wants to help your business save money by reducing waste and the costs of waste disposal, and is giving away a FREE business waste audit ($500 value) by Green Step Solutions to one lucky local business. The audit will help identify opportunities to divert recyclables from the landfill and to save money on collection.

Send an email to climate.action@summerland.ca before 4pm on October 23 with the name of your Summerland business and one idea you have to make it easier for our business community to reduce waste, in order to be entered to win. You can also enter in person at Municipal Hall between October 16-23 by dropping off a business card with an idea for reducing waste written on the back. The winner will be selected by random draw.
